Seamab Introductory Film

Seamab wanted to create an explainer film that visually conveyed their mission, ethos and facilities to potential donors. A creative approach was required to ensure that we tell the story in a sensitive way. Because children that attend the school are extremely vulnerable, respecting their privacy is paraount. There was importance on creating a film which is not only informative, but also emotive — painting a picture of the turmoil children have faced in the past and charting their journey from the inital turbulance through to passing the doors of Seamab and beyond. We wanted to highlight the positive changes Seamab makes to their life — changes which develop each individual into a person that can not only cope, but flourish in the wider world.

Working closely with the team at Seamab all the way through, Pixel Theatre also enlisted the services of illustrator Kimberly Carpenter of Thunder and Icecream to design and illustrate the main protagonist and supporting characters. We also got real children to play the role of Seamab students for the final shot of the film. Kimberly used reference photography of the children to inform the characters design and we made sure the characters designs matched the clothing of the real children to aid their transition from cartoon to the real world.

Using strong symbolism, and building on Seamab's visual language and tone of voice, the film tells the story of one child who is in urgent need of help, exploring how the school, accommodation, staff and Sea Changers fulfil their needs and help them grow into a more settled, happy individual.
